Turkmenistan Sets Strategic Priorities for 80th United Nations General Assembly

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan is preparing for the milestone 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Based on the initiatives of President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov, Turkmenistan’s Priority Positions have been developed, defining the country’s foreign policy guidelines for the upcoming political year. This was announced by Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov during a regular government meeting on Friday.

The document includes several key areas, such as strengthening global peace and security, sustainable development, transport diplomacy, energy, digitalization, ecology, and humanitarian cooperation, according to official Turkmen media.

Turkmenistan plans to include an agenda item titled “Neutrality for the Sake of Peace and Security” at the session, and to submit draft resolutions on the role of neutrality policy in international relations and on establishing an International Day of Mediation. The country also intends to actively participate in drafting a UN guidance document on the principles of neutrality and hold consultations on the creation of a UN Mediation Chamber.

Among other proposals are the proclamation of a “UN Decade for Sustainable Transport” (2026–2035), a draft resolution on the importance of stable energy connectivity, the creation of a Global Digital Integration Platform, the establishment of a Regional Center to Combat Desertification in Central Asia, and the organization of the Second Caspian Environmental Forum in 2026.

In the humanitarian sphere, Turkmenistan is putting forward initiatives to hold an international conference titled “Women, Peace and Security”, establish a training platform for young peacekeepers in Ashgabat, introduce an International Day of Multilingual Diplomacy, and adopt a resolution on the cultural heritage of the Great Silk Road.

In the legal field, the country proposes declaring 2028 the Year of International Law and is preparing to nominate Turkmenistan for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the term 2031–2032.

The Priority Positions will be submitted to the UN Secretariat and distributed among the organization’s member states.

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized the importance of thorough preparation for the upcoming session, noting that developing multilateral cooperation with the UN remains one of the key directions of the country’s foreign policy.

The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly will open on September 9, 2025, and conclude on September 8, 2026.
