Turkmenistan, Afghanistan Sign Agreement to Modernize Torghundi Port

Turkmenistan and Afghanistan have signed an agreement and a contract to implement an investment project at the Torghundi dry port, located in Herat province. The deal outlines plans to expand the port's infrastructure with an initial investment of $5 million. TOLOnews reported the development on Friday.

The project includes the construction of warehouses and the design and creation of new facilities for loading and unloading commercial cargo. According to Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, a representative of Afghanistan's Ministry of Public Works, the new infrastructure will be used to process cargo on the Torghundi-Herat railway line.

He stated that the investment will be provided by Turkmenistan, but the work will be carried out on Afghan territory in accordance with local legislation. Upon completion of the project, the funds invested will be returned to the Turkmen company through revenues generated from the operation of the new facilities.

Turkmenistan remains one of Afghanistan's leading trade and economic partners. The two countries cooperate in areas such as the supply of electricity, oil, and gas, as well as within the framework of major regional projects, including the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline, the development of fiber-optic communications, and railway infrastructure.

The implementation of the Torghundi port project is expected to enhance transit trade between the two countries and contribute to the expansion of regional economic cooperation.
