EU Develops Strategy to Support Landlocked Developing Countries

The European Union has developed a clear strategy to support landlocked developing countries (LLDCs), focusing on financing, infrastructure and trade integration. EU Special Representative for Central Asia Eduards Stiprais announced the strategy on Wednesday during the Third UN Conference on LLDCs (LLDC3) in Avaza, according to official Turkmen media.

Stiprais said the EU sees financing as a key tool for ensuring sustainable development. “Financial mechanisms play an important role in removing barriers, developing infrastructure and expanding trade opportunities,” he said.

He emphasized that Brussels is paying particular attention to projects aimed at improving transport connectivity and integrating vulnerable economies into global supply chains. These initiatives, he said, are intended to reduce inequality and expand market access.

“We are committed to implementing concrete initiatives that help landlocked countries gain equal access to development opportunities, regardless of their geographic location,” the EU representative added.

Of the 32 landlocked developing countries, 16 are in Africa, 10 in Asia, 4 in Europe and 2 in Latin America. LLDCs are home to more than 500 million people, about 7% of the world’s population, according to the United Nations.
