Turkmenistan, Austria Discuss Expanding Europe–Asia Freight via Turkmenbashi

The administration of Turkmenbashi International Seaport met with a delegation from Austria’s Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs on the sidelines of the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3) in Avaza. The talks focused on expanding international freight transport along Europe–Asia routes passing through Turkmenistan.

The Austrian delegation was briefed on the port’s technical capabilities, terminal infrastructure, container handling services, and multimodal transport operations. Delegates also toured key logistics facilities and observed operational processes, according to Turkmenistan’s State Service for Maritime and River Transport on Thursday.

Discussions explored ways to enhance transport corridors, improve logistics efficiency, implement digitalization, and adopt green technologies. Special attention was given to environmentally sustainable solutions and cooperation in sustainable transport development.

Following the meeting, both sides expressed interest in strengthening mutually beneficial partnerships to support Turkmenistan’s integration into global trade and transport chains between Europe and Asia.

Turkmenbashi International Seaport is the largest and most modern port in the Caspian region, spanning more than 150 hectares. It has an annual cargo handling capacity of 17 million tons, including accommodation for up to 300,000 passengers, 75,000 trucks, and 400,000 TEU containers. The port also processes up to 3 million tons of bulk cargo and 4 million tons of general cargo, excluding petroleum products.
